Murphy Geoscience Advisors are recognized as subject matter experts within the organization and impact business through support of multiple projects, or key roles in major projects, and have a multi-year track record as key value creators. Additionally, they actively mentor, train and provide input on staff development including both coursework and on-the-job experiences to grow technical abilities. They are often selected as functional representatives for corporate and technical-focused activities and initiatives, helping to set direction as a technical expert within the company.
The Geologic Advisor brings extensive technical expertise in global basins and petroleum systems, focusing on prospect maturation and assurance. Supporting the Houston-based Vietnam Exploration Team, this role applies geophysical and geological skills from early exploration through appraisal. Key responsibilities include regional and sub-regional seismic interpretation, seismic mapping, qualitative and quantitative seismic analysis, lead identification, prospect evaluation, and maturation.
The Advisor works with the Exploration Manager to set and execute Murphy's Vietnam strategy, ensuring effective communication with executive leadership. They oversee all exploration phases-including data acquisition, block assessments, well operations, and partner management-and ensure activities are conducted safely, responsibly, and in line with industry standards and company values. The Advisor provides rigorous technical oversight to mature high-quality opportunities and deliver new resources.
The ideal candidate is proactive, collaborative, and thrives in a dynamic environment. They are skilled in seismic interpretation, integrating complex datasets, and advancing exploration concepts to drill-ready prospects. Strong analytical abilities, operational support during drilling, and sound decision-making based on comprehensive data are essential. The candidate will have the ability to see and appreciate multiple viewpoints and make sound decisions based on all available data.
A firm understanding of geologic models for resource estimation and risk application utilizing statistical software such as RoseRA is required. Additional beneficial skills include demonstrated proficiency in The Petrel Suite and a familiarity with software such as Paleoscan and Kingdom interpretation platforms.
The individual should possess skills to mentor junior team members and establish robust, high-quality workflows that enhance team performance and deliver consistent results.
An ability to regularly travel to Vietnam is required.
The Geoscience Advisor will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.
Responsibilities
- Clearly construct a geologic story, develop concise supporting presentations, and regularly communicate a recommendation to senior executives
- Interpret seismic data to create regional maps and advance exploration concepts.
- Evaluate regional basins and hydrocarbon systems.
- Mature prospects and leads, ensuring technical rigor and clear risk assessment.
- Conduct uncertainty analysis, volumetric estimation, and value assessment.
- Assess and rank portfolio opportunities with thorough documentation.
- Oversee quality assurance and control in geotechnical projects.
- Present farm-out opportunities and evaluate incoming farm-in proposals.
- Communicate regularly with partners on joint ventures, technical reviews, and project coordination.
- Collaborate on technical discussions, peer reviews, and mentoring.
- Develop organizational talent and lead junior staff in geology and geophysics
Qualifications / Requirements
- Expert level at geologically consistent workflows for well-based interpretation, petrophysical integration, and subsurface evaluation
- Petrel interpretation software experience required as well as strong working knowledge in resource analysis (RoseRA), Paleoscan, preferred ArcGIS experience, and ideally HampsonRussell and/or Rockdoc applications
- Master's Degree in Geology or Geophysics
- Minimum 20 years' experience in exploration with preferably with experience in the various rift basins across the globe / global rift basins
- Must have the ability to travel regularly to Vietnam
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
