The founders of Travis® Body & Trailer, Inc. began operations in 1989 after purchasing the facilities of CMC Trailers, Inc. in Houston, Texas. During the first year, Travis manufactured only the classic aluminum end dump trailer. These trailers were little changed from the older CMC designs from the 1970's and 1980's. Job Purpose:
The Engineering Manager provides technical leadership and operational oversight to ensure product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and continuous improvement across the organization. This role leads a team of engineers, drives new product and process development, supports safety and lean initiatives, and works hands-on within production to resolve issues and align engineering activities with manufacturing needs. The position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a consistent on-site presence.
Essential Job Responsibilities: Following are the specific job responsibilities and duties necessary to accomplish the job purpose.
Leadership & Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of five engineering staff.
- Hire, train, and develop engineers and supporting personnel.
- Conduct performance reviews and resolve internal issues.
- Communicate and collaborate with other managers, suppliers, and contractors.
- Prepare and deliver engineering-related presentations and reports.
- Support and promote company safety initiatives across engineering and production.
Engineering Oversight & Technical Leadership
- Serve as the engineering leader and technical expert.
- Direct, review, approve, and modify product designs and engineering changes.
- Ensure technical accuracy and quality of engineering work.
- Develop and maintain engineering plans, processes, and procedures.
- Oversee manufacturing engineering activities and related projects.
- Investigate warranty issues and determine corrective actions.
- Lead and participate in Kaizen and Lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Serve as the company's subject matter expert in lean manufacturing principles.
Hands-On Production Engagement
- Routinely work on the production floor to troubleshoot issues and drive process improvements.
- Partner with production teams to optimize quality, workflow, and performance.
Strategic Planning & Project Execution
- Prepare and manage budgets and timelines for engineering projects.
- Develop project schedules and drive execution for manufacturing and design engineering.
- Budget and justify capital expenditures.
- Oversee research and development of new products and procedures.
- Identify new project opportunities and process improvements through ongoing R&D efforts.
Essential Skills, Experience and Education: Following are the skills, experience, education and related course work typically required or expected to perform the essential job functions:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, preferably in a management or supervisory capacity.
Technical Skills
- Strong analytical and mathematical abilities for solving complex problems.
- Knowledge of welding and machining principles.
- Proficiency with engineering and production software, including:
- Syteline
- SolidWorks
- DraftSight
- ProNest
- EnRoute
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Leadership & Management Competencies
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop a technical team.
- Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Workstyle & Professional Capabilities
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a timeline-driven environment.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
Other Requirements
- Ability to attend and participate in required company meetings.
- Ability to travel occasionally as required.
Essential Physical Requirements: The physical factors and working conditions required or expected while performing the essential functions of the job are described below:
- Regularly lifting and carrying 30 lbs. unassisted
- Regularly pulling and pushing 30 lbs. unassisted
- Repeated reaching overhead
- Regularly kneeling, stooping, bending and turning at waist
- Regularly climbing ladder above 2 ft.
- Working in inclement weather
- Able to wear PPE at all times: safety glasses, steel to shoes, etc.

Required Work Hours and Schedules: The typical work hours and schedules for the job are indicated below, including the percentage and type of travel, if required.
- Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.4:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.5:00 p.m.
- Overtime as needed.
