Department: Academic Advising Salary: $15.00Description:
The Peer Mentor is a trained undergraduate student employee who supports the College of Sciences and Technology Advising Center by providing front-line student support, peer mentoring, course planning and enrollment assistance under the supervision of professional academic advisors. This role focuses on helping CST students understand their degree plan for their declared major, navigating university resources, and providing early academic support while maintaining strict adherence to FERPA and advising protocols. Peer Mentor Advisors do not provide official academic advising or degree approvals.
Key Responsibilities
Assist students with scheduling advising appointments and preparing for meetings with professional academic advisors
Assist students in navigating UHD technologies and platforms, including but not limited to:
- MyUHD
- EAB Navigate
- Degree plans and catalog resources
- UHD email and student portals
- Assist with advising outreach programs, orientations, workshops, and special events as assigned
- Refer students to appropriate professional advisors or campus offices when questions involve academic policy, degree requirements, exceptions, or approvals
- Maintain the confidentiality of student information and adhere to FERPA, UHD policies, and advising center procedures
- Participate in required training, staff meetings, and ongoing professional development related to student success and customer service

- Active in campus life (student organizations, clubs, or leadership roles)
- Self-starter able to manage multiple priorities
- Passion for helping peers achieve academic and career goals
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability in a student-facing role
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Houston-Downtown
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Preferred Qualifications
- Majoring within the College of Sciences and Technology (CST)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Prior experience in peer mentoring, student leadership, tutoring, or customer service
