Description
The Sheriff's Office seeks to fill a Sheriff's Corrections Assistant II position at the Cois C. Byrd Correctional Facility in Murietta. The incumbent under general supervision, reviews court documents, applies penal codes, and bail table rules and regulations; performs time computations to determine inmates' sentence and proper release date; enters, updates, and accesses booking charges and other crime statistics into/from computerized law enforcement tracking systems; performs other related specialized clerical duties in support of the Corrections Bureau; and performs other related duties as required.The Sheriff's Corrections Assistant II is the advanced journey level class in the Sheriff's Corrections Assistant series, serves in a lead capacity, and typically reports to a Supervising Sheriff's Corrections Assistant or a correctional or sworn sergeant. This class is distinguished from the Supervising Sheriff's Corrections Assistant in that the latter is the first line supervisory level in the class series.
The Sheriff's Corrections Assistant series differs from the Office Assistant series by the former having responsibility for performing specialized clerical duties in a correctional facility. This series requires a thorough understanding of specific laws, law enforcement codes, rules and regulations, and the ability to interpret and apply this knowledge to a variety of legal documents and transactions.

Based on the number of applications received, the posting may close without notice.• Assist line staff in receiving court documents and review them for accuracy; interpret court proceedings to determine which inmates are to be released or detained; ensure inmates are scheduled appropriately for future court appearances.
• Oversee the Business Office portion of inmate booking including inputting charges into the Jail Information Management System (JIMS); query the California Law Enforcement Tracking System (CLETS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer automated criminal information tracking systems for accuracy; review booking charges and the proper application of the bail schedule and rules to determine bail.
• Verify information in an inmate's file and apply appropriate rules/regulations in order to compute the inmate's sentence(s) to determine proper discharge date.
• Review time computations to ensure calculation is consistent with court documents; confirm release date and ensure release date has been entered into JIMS.
• Order supplies and equipment by monitoring inventory levels and prepare proper paperwork; may calculate and process employee payroll documents.
• Compile a variety of complex narrative and statistical reports; locate sources of data and determine proper format of finished report.
• Train sworn and non-sworn staff on functions of the Business Office; train new employees and complete weekly progress evaluations.
• Prepare a variety of complex statistical reports, highly confidential reports, correspondence, and other specialized documents.
• Act as shift supervisor as required; participate in the selection, training, and evaluation of subordinate staff. Education : Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
Experience: One year of experience as a Sheriff's Corrections Assistant I with Riverside County.
OR
Two years of experience with a governmental law enforcement agency working in a correctional facility performing specialized clerical duties as listed above.
Knowledge of: The laws, regulations, codes, department policies and procedures related to correctional facility operations; basic understanding of the procedures related to the preparation, revision, and processing of legal documents as they pertain to those in custody; operation of complex computerized criminal information systems; general operation of the County correctional system and its interface with other components of the criminal justice system; statistical and fiscal recordkeeping principles; the application of the Public Records Act.
Ability to: Understand and apply laws, codes, regulations, rules, and departmental policies and procedures in the processing of inmates; release confidential information to appropriate person; compute complex sentences and determine bail amounts on inmates with multiple cases and/or charges; query a variety of complex automated criminal information software systems; communicate effectively with department staff, other agencies, and the public both verbally and in written form; perform difficult and specialized clerical tasks which involve considerable detail; meet departmental production and accuracy standards; perform highly complex clerical processing duties; act as a lead worker over the different classifications of staff assigned to the Business Office; proof and correct draft documents in order to produce an acceptable final document; train staff, identify training requirements, and coordinate their work; make important custody and security decisions quickly and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; lead under stressful conditions.
Other Requirements
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
