Position SummaryThe Social Work Supervisor applies specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and addictions, including severe mental illness in adults. This position provides direct clinical services, supervises social work and behavioral health programs, and supports integration of services across Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM) programs and community partners to improve overall client health outcomes.
Scope and Impact
The Social Work Supervisor oversees program operations, ensures service quality and compliance, and promotes the integration of behavioral health and social work services throughout MHM programs. This role impacts patient and client care, program efficiency, and the delivery of coordinated community-based services. The position supervises staff within the Social Work Services department.
Decision-Making Authority
Operates with a high degree of autonomy in clinical practice and supervision. Makes decisions regarding treatment planning, program operations, staff assignments, and policy recommendations. Provides leadership in ensuring compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and quality standards.
Interactions / Working Relationships
Collaborates with internal MHM departments, Wesley Nurses, behavioral health staff, and external partners such as schools, healthcare facilities, and community agencies. Acts as a liaison and advocate for clients, ensuring effective communication and coordinated service delivery across programs and community resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Apply advanced clinical knowledge and skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, including severe mental illness.
- Provide individual, marital, couple, family, and group therapy using evidence-based treatment methods such as psychotherapy and motivational interviewing.
- Utilize DSM, ICD, and other diagnostic systems for assessment and treatment planning.
- Apply expertise in treatment planning, case management, consultation, supervision, education, research, advocacy, and program development.
- Support and train team members in the use of motivational interviewing and integrated care models.
- Partner with other departments to provide integrated care services to improve client outcomes.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans.
- Oversee social work and behavioral health programs, including staff assignments, coverage, crisis intervention, and policy development.
- Promote integration across all MHM services to ensure cohesive, whole-person care.
- Monitor program staff performance to ensure effective delivery of counseling and case management services.
- Evaluate and update service procedures, ensuring compliance with established policies and recommending improvements.
- Coordinate quality assurance activities to assess service effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Analyze program data and prepare reports for the Social Work Services Manager, using data to guide planning and resource allocation.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement projects and programs to address identified community needs and optimize caseload distribution.
- Maintain accurate and timely client records, ensuring completeness and compliance with documentation standards.
- Serve as client advocate and liaison between clients, agencies, and service providers.
- Build strong linkages between MHM programs and community organizations to expand service capacity and access.
- Participate in community outreach events during regular business hours, evenings, and weekends as needed.
- Meet productivity expectations established by the Social Work Manager.
- Supervise all administrative aspects of the counseling and social work program, including supplies, office space, record security, time management, and staff schedules.
- Develop and implement intervention strategies that support both short- and long-term client goals.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Directly supervises staff within the Social Work Services department in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include hiring, training, scheduling, approving timesheets, evaluating performance, ensuring compliance with safety standards, addressing complaints, and resolving employee and client issues.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Education: Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related field.
- Licenses/Certifications: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) required.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of clinical experience providing counseling services. At least one year of experience supervising counselors or social workers preferred.
- Other Required Skills/Knowledge: Strong leadership, clinical assessment, and program management skills. Ability to coordinate interdisciplinary care and ensure quality service delivery.
- Experience in integrated behavioral health or community-based care settings.
- Experience supervising multidisciplinary teams.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Familiarity with quality assurance and data-driven program management.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in documentation, report writing, and data interpretation.
- Commitment to ethical practice, cultural competence, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to perform independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret medical, professional, and technical documents. Capable of presenting information effectively to clients, community members, and internal staff.
Technology and Tools
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and electronic health record (EHR) systems. Ability to efficiently document and manage clinical information electronically.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed in an office or clinic environment with direct client contact.
- Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
- Must be able to lift or maneuver up to 25 pounds.
- May involve occasional evening or weekend work and participation in community events.
- Requires a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and auto liability insurance.
