The State University of New York Maritime College is currently looking to employ officers and staff for this year's summer training aboard T.S. EMPIRE STATE.
The TS Empire State is looking for temporary personnel to teach and conduct training evolutions during this period. A full range of marine education and training topics will be offered to the cadets; therefore, the school is searching for flexible instructors. Candidates need to be comfortable with teaching a full range of topics including all aspects of maintenance and repair, ship and boat handling, line handling and mooring, all levels of navigation, lifeboats, life rafts, ships construction, stability, firefighting, safety and safety inspections, license preparation, and any other related topics.
The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties.
The Full Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin April 30, 2026 and ends July 20, 2026. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following.
Cruise A Half: April 30, 2026 - June 09, 2026
Cruise B Half: June 10, 2026 - July 20, 2026
Full Cruise: April 30, 2026 - July 20, 2026

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- US Passport
- Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC)
- Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) - Note: All applicants must have an MMC
- Valid Medical Certificate - Note: Note: The Medical Certificate is issued with the original
MMC; however it must be renewed every 2-years - Demonstrated ability in teaching applicable materials (for academic appointments)
- Recent sea experience (for operational appointments)
- DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Documentation
Letter from employer indicating that you have been in a random testing program meeting the criteria of 46 CFR 16.230 for at least 60 days (from the first day on the ship) during the previous 185 days and have not failed nor refused to participate in a chemical test for dangerous drugs.
OR
Passed a chemical test for dangerous drugs, required under Title 46 CFR 16.210 within the previous 185 days (from the first day on the ship).
A COPY OF ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT. IF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION IS NOT PROVIDED BY THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT YOUR APPLICATION CAN NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT. ALL DATES FOR US PASSPORT, TWIC, MMC AND MEDICAL CERTIFICATE MUST BE VALID FOR THE ENTIRETY OF YOUR ANTICIPATED APPOINTMENT.
Preferred Qualifications:
- United State Coast Guard (USCG) license or related industry/teaching experience
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching professional subject matter
- Demonstrated communication skills
Additional Information:
Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Meals are included. Travel expenses may be reimbursed and will be assessed on a case by case basis.
This is a temporary appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Review of applications to commence immediately.
