- Technical Lead Data Scientist

OverviewWe are seeking a full-time Technical Lead Data Scientist in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for serving as both a hands-on technical expert and a strategic leader, guiding the design, development, and deployment of machine learning solutions across complex, cross-functional initiatives. This role is responsible for ensuring scientific rigor, technical quality, and operational impact of data science efforts while fostering a high-performing team culture while partnering with product managers, software engineers, business stakeholders, and executive leadership to align data science initiatives with business goals, drive innovation, and ensure scalable, secure and ethical deployment of machine learning models.
Essential Functions
- Provide technical leadership across the full data science lifecycle-from data exploration and feature engineering to model development, deployment, and monitoring
- Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of advanced machine learning models and systems that address critical business challenges
- Mentor and coach junior and mid-level data scientists, enabling continuous technical and professional growth across the team
- Set and enforce best practices in model development, versioning, testing, validation, interpretability, documentation, and deployment
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and business teams to define problem statements, assess feasibility, and design effective data-driven solutions
- Oversee the design and development of scalable data pipelines, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and maintainability
- Champion MLOps practices, including CI/CD for machine learning models, automated testing, and performance monitoring in production environments
- Conduct regular peer reviews to ensure code quality, reproducibility, and collaborative learning
- Translate complex analytical results into clear, compelling insights for non-technical stakeholders, leveraging visualizations and executive-ready presentations
- Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to improve model performance and development workflows
- Promote a culture of ethical AI, ensuring adherence to data governance, privacy laws, and bias mitigation standards
- Collaborate with leadership to prioritize initiatives, allocate resources, and drive long-term data strategy
- Value code quality, maintainability, and reproducibility
- Embrace a continuous learning mindset and foster a culture of knowledge sharing
- Strong commitment to aligning technical work with business impact
- Bachelor's Degree in in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math or Physics or a technical field (such as CIS or IT) relevant to the essential functions of this job description AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrated excellence in designing and implementing ML solutions using languages (e.g. SQL, Python, or R) and using learning frameworks (e.g., Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Deep experience with statistical modeling, machine learning, and inferential techniques
- Strong background in data wrangling, feature engineering and model optimization
- Proven experience in MLOps and model deployment pipelines in production environments
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders alike
- Comfortable working in agile, iterative environments with cross-disciplinary teams
- Expertise in time series forecasting, natural language processing, or deep learning architectures
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) for scalable machine learning workloads
- Experience with distributed computing, real-time data processing (Kafka, Spark), or streaming analytics
- Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Seaborn, Plotly, Tableau)
- Familiarity with data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and ethical AI frameworks
- Track record of leading cross-functional projects from inception to successful deployment
