Position Overview: The Laydown Yard Operator is responsible for the efficient and organized operation of laydown yard activities. This role involves handling and managing incoming and outgoing material and shipments, maintaining inventory accuracy, ensuring a safe and clean working environment within the laydown yard, while supporting warehouse and fleet operations. The Laydown Yard Operator will collaborate with various departments to meet production and distribution goals while adhering to company policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Equipment Operation: Operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts, telehandlers, and pallet jacks, in a safe and efficient manner. Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment and report any issues.
2. Quality Control: Conduct quality checks on incoming and outgoing products to ensure compliance with company standards. Report and address any quality issues promptly.
3. Inventory Management: Receive, inspect, and record incoming shipments of materials and assets delivered to the laydown yard. Maintain accurate records of inventory levels and locations. Perform regular cycle counts and reconcile discrepancies.
4. Order Fulfillment: Load materials and assets onto trailers / other equipment, and fulfil loading requests in a timely and accurate manner. Ensure that all outgoing shipments comply with shipping and documentation standards.
5. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing warehouse activities. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
6. Organization and Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and organized yard space. Properly label and store assets in designated locations.
7. Communication and Collaboration: Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments. Collaborate with other departments to fulfill cross-functional objectives.
8. Audit Control: Complete periodic internal audit reports for inventory tracking and accuracy.
9. Inter-Department Flexibility: Laydown Yard Operator may be periodically required to assist Warehouse Technicians with inventory, forklift operation, material tracking, and shipping.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Driver License
• Proven experience in warehouse operations.
• Ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, telehandler, pallet jack, etc)
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
• Certification in forklift and telehandler operation preferred.
o Crane certification a plus
• Ability to move and park trucks hauling trailers within the laydown yard; as well as connection and disconnection of trailers from trucks
o Commercial Driver License (CDL) a plus
• Knowledge of industry best practices in lay down and storage yard management.
• Working mechanical knowledge of heavy machinery and equipment preferred.
o Working knowledge of trailer and automotive mechanical a plus
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work outdoors for long periods, to monitor operations and ensure compliance with procedures.
• Comfortable standing, walking, bending, and kneeling during the workday.
• Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds (occasionally more, depending on the role) for tasks such as inspecting goods or assisting in inventory management.
• Lifting and handling of packages or materials that are being checked, moved, or prepared for shipment.
• The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, remaining on your feet for extended periods.
• Endurance to manage multiple tasks and remain alert during long shifts, especially in high-volume or peak periods.
• Ability to operate lay down yard and warehouse equipment such as forklifts, telehandlers, pallet jacks, and other machinery safely and efficiently *
• Fine motor skills are necessary for handling paperwork, scanning barcodes, or managing inventory data.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures outdoors (depending on the warehouse environment-could be cold storage, ambient, or hot environments).
• Work conditions may include noise from machinery or ventilation systems, and occasional exposure to dust or other materials. Outdoor environmental exposure including dirt, dust, noise, etc
• Handling small tools, devices, or technology used in inventory tracking or quality control.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend and lift over long periods of time.
• Ability to work outdoors and in various conditions like hot, cold, dusty or noisy environments.
Mental Requirements:
• High level of attention to processing various tasks, such as inventory tracking, order fulfillment, and quality checks.
• Ability to catch errors in shipments, labels, and stock counts that could result in costly mistakes or delays.
• Ability to work within a team or individually.
• Ability to communicate clearly with all levels of staff, suppliers, and other departments, ensuring smooth collaboration and resolution of any issues.
• The ability to stay organized, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines.
• Time management skills are essential to ensure that inventory management, shipping, and receiving operations proceed smoothly and on schedule.
• The ability to manage various aspects of storage and yard operations simultaneously, from overseeing shipments to handling employee concerns.
• Mental awareness of safety protocols and industry regulations to ensure the laydown yard remains compliant with local laws and safety standards.
• Ability to make decisions that prioritize the health and safety of the team while maintaining productivity.
• Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and adhere to standard operating procedures to maintain safety and efficiency in the laydown yard and warehouse.
Working Conditions:
This position requires standing for extended periods, lifting heavy objects, and working in various temperature conditions. The Laydown Yard Operator may be required to work flexible hours based on operational needs.
